Girls Empowering Girls\u2019s Impact: Leticia\u2019s Journey to Self-Discovery and Leadership<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

At just 15, Nambuya Leticia<\/strong> from Mbuya showed remarkable resilience when her family\u2019s income collapsed during the COVID-19 pandemic. Through the Girls Empowering Girls (GEG)<\/strong> programme, Leticia\u2019s family received mentorship, a cash transfer, and encouragement to explore income-generating opportunities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Inspired by her daughter\u2019s determination, Leticia\u2019s father launched a brick-making business, eventually producing over 1,000 bricks per week<\/strong>. The steady income has secured Leticia\u2019s school fees and enabled the family to move from a single-room home to a comfortable two-room house.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cHelping my father with ideas and watching our business grow has shown me that girls can also make a difference at home,\u201d<\/em> Leticia says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The family\u2019s story has become a source of inspiration in Mbuya. Mr. Shangi now employs local youth, mentors boys on hard work and planning, and shares parenting lessons with other fathers. Meanwhile, Leticia actively advocates for girls\u2019 education at her school and dreams of becoming a civil engineer<\/strong> to help build her community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cLeticia\u2019s family is a model of resilience and initiative,\u201d<\/em> notes Ms. Eunice<\/strong>, Programme Coordinator. \u201cThey\u2019ve turned support into sustainable change that benefits both their household and the wider community.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

GEG at a Glance<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The GEG programme has supported over 1,500 adolescent girls<\/strong> in Kampala to:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

  • Stay in school<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • Access essential health and protection services<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • Launch family-driven income-generating activities<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n

    The initiative has proven that with the right opportunities, young people can spark lasting transformation within their communities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Sustaining the Impact<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

    From 11th to 15th August 2025<\/strong>, KCCA, in partnership with the Government of Uganda and UNICEF Uganda, convened a Review and Planning Workshop<\/strong>. Guided by UNICEF, implementing partners reflected on the programme\u2019s successes and charted a path for sustainability as the initiative approaches its phase-out stage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    The workshop focused on:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    • Identifying effective case interventions<\/li>\n\n\n\n
    • Developing community-led frameworks<\/li>\n\n\n\n
    • Ensuring the programme continues to thrive beyond funding from UNICEF and the Belgium Government<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n
