Turning Skills into Opportunity: Paula’s GEG Journey

Nambusi Paula’s life transformed with the GEG programme’s cash transfer. Her mother opened a grocery shop, ensuring daily income and enabling Paula to attend weekend classes, improving her performance. Paula invested in doormat making, earning a profit and now trains friends in the craft. Her mother plans to expand the business, retain the girls, and meet customer demand, securing a brighter future for Paula and her friends.

“I’m happy I can attend all my lessons and still earn skills that can help me and my friends in the future,” Paula shares with a smile.

Paula’s story shows how GEG’s mentorship, cash transfers, and support for practical life skills can uplift girls, strengthen families, and create opportunities for community growth.

The Girls Empowering Girls (GEG) programme has achieved remarkable success with 1,500 voices of positive change. This inspiring initiative has proven that with the right opportunities, young people can drive lasting transformation in their communities.

Building on this momentum, a recent meeting guided by UNICEF brought together implementing partners to focus on the programme’s phase-out stage. The goal was to identify effective case interventions and frame them into sustainable frameworks that can continue to thrive even after funding from UNICEF and the Belgium Government comes to an end. By doing so, the programme aims to leave a lasting legacy that will continue to empower adolescent girls and their communities for years to come.
