Kabendi’s Journey: Overcoming Refugee Challenges and Thriving through the Girls Empowering Girls Program

Kabendi Adriana Mukendi, a senior two student (S2), shares her remarkable journey as a refugee from Congo who arrived in Uganda in 2013. Having spent 10 years in Uganda, she highlights the pivotal role of the Girls Empowering Girls (GEG) program, which began in 2019 when she was in P5.

The GEG program proved instrumental in ensuring Kabendi’s uninterrupted education by providing financial support. The funds sent under GEG were utilized to cover school fees and essential items, allowing her to complete her primary education without hindrance.

A key aspect of the GEG programme was the inclusion of mentors from the Trailblazers Mentoring Foundation. Kabendi expresses gratitude for the mentorship she received, emphasizing the valuable lessons imparted. Her mentor guided her on personal safety in society, educated her on menstruation hygiene, and instilled etiquette principles.

Kabendi acknowledges the GEG program for not only facilitating financial support but also for bringing UN support to vulnerable adolescent girls in Kampala. The program’s ongoing impact is evident in the continuous mentorship that has played a crucial role in Kabendi’s personal and educational development.
